The traditional dovetails that join the corners of the box are a timeless, functional detail that has marked high-quality woodwork for centuries. The lid features a frame-and-panel design with reinforced mitered corners. The box and lid frame are solid American Cherry, and the lid panel is Bigleaf Maple from the Pacific Northwest. The hinged lid opens to a separate top compartment that allows for a wide range of memorabilia to remain close at hand, and the panel provides plenty of space for laser-engraving a memorial, for instance. The upper compartment is lined with faux suede fabric in a lovely silvery-green color. The main compartment is accessed, and secured, by a plywood bottom panel fastened with screws.

The box and lid exterior are finished with several coats of a traditional wiping varnish, which offers long-term protection as well as a lovely look and feel. Interior surfaces, including the bottom of the lid, are finished with a traditional shellac coating that does not impart an odor to the interior of the box.
